Hello and welcome, I’m a wife and mom making more out of every day since becoming my own boss. I am loving the amazing career and lifestyle change of working from home. I look forward to sharing my experiences and lessons learned – the tools and knowledge I’ve gained.
You can find me riding bikes with my family, shopping at Trader Joes or watching The Profit.
Being your own boss means being respondable for all the details. And it also means getting to celebrate all the successes. It means the ability to work from anywhere and at anytime of day. It means a higher need for prioritization and efficiency. And it means making extra effort to build business relationships.
A question I am asked often is why I went out on my own. I have been lucky to have worked for some amazing bosses and mentors. And I’ve worked for some not so good ones too.
I learned some tough career lessons the past few years. I prided myself on being a team player but started to notice the specialists were the ones being recognized, rewarded and promoted. The team players were being left behind.
Upon the realization that to get ahead I needed to be a specialist I refocused how I spent my time at my job. I started offering to take on assignments that had a return on the investment of my time and effort to my career growth goals.
I took on roles that allowed me to learn new skills or put me in front of people that could be a benefit in my next job search.
Because of this plan I gained knowledge about something highly valued in my industry and became a “go to person.” I was a specialist. This specialized knowledge led to a call with an offer of a long term contract.
Contract work had not been on my career path but sometimes life offers unexpected opportunities and I am so glad I accepted this one! Every morning I wake up feeling like I won the career lottery.
I honestly never expected to become my own boss. I always considered it a dream goal but never expected it to ever happen.
In that most recent office job, I spent a number of years working in business development. Most people think of business development sales. I think of it as facilitating solutions to key needs.
Business development and client development is almost like dating. Relationship building is essential and the solution should be a good match for both sides.
I hope that you will enjoy the solutions I share to help you be sucessesful working from home too.
